Another Japan-Philippines milestone, but this one's about logistics, not anime.

The Acquisition and Cross-Servicing Agreement, or ACSA, between the Philippines and Japan takes effect on Saturday, August 22.

Okay, but what is ACSA?

Think of it as a sharing agreement for the military. It gives the Armed Forces of the Philippines and Japan's Self-Defense Forces a legal way to give each other supplies and services when they work together.

When does it apply?

  • Joint military exercises

  • Humanitarian aid and disaster response

  • Peacekeeping missions

  • Other activities both sides agree on

That disaster response part matters in a country hit by typhoons every year.

How we got here

  • January 15: Signed in Manila

  • July 23: Both sides exchanged diplomatic notes

  • August 22: Takes effect

It adds to the Reciprocal Access Agreement, which has been in force since September 2025 and covers visits by each other's forces.

Bonus context

2026 marks 70 years since the Philippines and Japan normalized diplomatic relations. The Senate even passed a resolution in July celebrating the friendship.
